A bulk oxygen system is an assembly of equipment such as oxygen storage containers, pressure regulators, safety devices, vaporizers, manifolds, and interconnecting piping, which has a storage capacity of.
With the presence of oxygen there is the hazard of combustion. Systems must be located such that they are not near combustible or flammable material. The components of the systems must be constructed to operate safely for its intended application, complete with safety devices. A warning sign to indicate that no smoking or open flames are allowed must be permanently posted.
Before being put into service the system components must be cleaned to remove oil, grease, hydrocarbons, or other material that may oxidize. This material can present the threat of combustion or fire. A schedule of maintenance including the removal of combustible material such as long grass and other debris should be kept.
The unit also needs to be protected from physical damage and tampering. This includes damage from everyday use and from outside sources such as vandalism.
Consult OSHA's requirements and your local fire marshals office for more information regarding the installation of oxygen bulk systems.
